Charted: Global GHG Emissions by Sector in 2023

Global greenhouse gas emissions set a new record in 2023, with data showing no indication of an emissions peak despite climate action measures. According to a recent report, there is a 50% chance that global warming will exceed 1.5°C on a consistent basis within the next six years.

In this graphic, we show greenhouse gas emissions by sector in 2023. Data was compiled by the United Nations.

New Record

Global greenhouse gas emissions hit 57.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2023, up 1.3% from 2022.

The power sector led in emissions, releasing 15.1 GtCO₂e, followed by the transport sector at 8.4 GtCO₂e. Agriculture and industry each added 6.5 GtCO₂e.

In the power sector, fossil fuels are widely used to generate electricity, releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide and methane. In transport, gasoline and diesel power most vehicles, leading to substantial emissions.

To achieve the Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C, UN projections indicate that global emissions must decrease by 7.5% annually through 2035.

Solar and wind energy technologies are expected to contribute 27% of the required emissions reductions by 2030. Forest management and conservation efforts could account for an additional 20% of reductions. Other strategies include improvements in energy efficiency, electrification, and fuel switching across buildings, transport, and industry.
